As the saying goes “you can experience all four seasons in one day on Dartmoor”, so dressing for the weather is important, warm layers, waterproofs, hat, gloves and a rucksack to put them all in when the sun comes out along with some nice snacks and a flask you will be already to enjoy a walk over Dartmoor. I would suggest keeping to hard tracks at this time of the year, which is easy if you follow Tor Royal Lane out past Peat Cott and down to Whiteworks and Fox Tor Mire which is better known as Grimstone mire in Arthur Conan-Doyle’s Hound of the Baskerville. When you meet the Devon Port leat crossing under the road, take a right and follow the leat downhill till you cross the stony track at Alder bridge, carry on following the track down wards towards the Burrator Resevoir which you will see in the distance when you hit the woodland follow the stone wall to the right up the steep until you again hit the leat which you can then follow up hill (right) back to Tor Royal Lane this will take you probably 3 hours..Now you may wish to pop into the @fodogsxtorcafe for a warming coffee and sit by the fire.
